New Public Defender Will Present His First Report to the Parliament Today

December 18, 2009

New public defender of Georgia Giorgi Tughushi will for present his first report to the parliament today.

Giorgi Tughushi will report about the human rights situation in the first half of 2009 on the plenary session today. His report has one hundred pages and it is about the facts of human rights violation by law enforcement officers, about living condition of IDPs, about the problems in penitentiary and judiciary systems, problems of religious minorities, freedom of expression and about other issues.

The report of public defender includes recommendations not only to governmental officials, but about legislation too. It is not clear yet how the parliamentary majority will react on the report. After the former public defender Sozar Subari opposed the government, the parliament received his reports only as notes. According to the current information, the parliamentary opposition fraction “Christian-Democrats” will submit alternative resolution project and they will request liability of all officials, who are mentioned in the report of public defender.

The parliament did not discuss the report of the second part of 2008 of the public defender and they say that the reason was delay in parliamentary work, because of the protest rallies of opposition parties in spring, 2008. Giorgi Tughushi became public defender in September, 2009.
