Vakhtang Maisaia’s Attorney Is Astonished

January 21, 2010
On January 20, Tbilisi City Court continued process of military expert Vakhtang Maisaia. Because of the specifics of the case, the meeting was closed.

Attorney of Vakhtang Maisaia Natia Korkotadze stated that the court finished interrogation of the accused and witnesses and now they are publishing the claiming of the prosecutor.

“We are astonished with the court proceeding and claiming of the prosecutor. The prosecutor’s office declares the information published by media outlets and on internet to be top secret. The provided evidence is read page-by-page. It is unfair. Today, the judge and Vakhtang Maisaia had an argument. My client did not comment on those absurd facts which were read by the judge. Maisaia told the prosecutor: “I do not comment on it,” said Korkotadze.

She said the trial will turn into the argument between the parties; however, the attorney cannot say how the defense side will succeed to prepare the defense statement within 10 days, which is estimated by the law. She thinks the proceeding will finish by February 5. Thus, next hearings are scheduled on Friday and Saturday.

The prosecutor’s office blames Maisaia in cooperation with Special Forces of foreign countries. According to the investigation, in accordance to the received directives, Maisaia used to prepare and send various information to special forces by e-mail; most part of the information was state secret among them information about military, political and economical situation in Georgia and about the changes in the government.

Vakhtang Maisaia was accused under Article 314 Part I of the Criminal Code of Georgia which envisages 12-year-imprisonment for espionage. Maisaia was arrested on May 5, 2009.
