Initiative Group of Journalists Trade Union Protests Violence against Journalists

Initiative group of the Trade Union of the people working for mass media protests violence against journalist.

The initiative group spread statement where they protested the violence against journalist Saba Tsitsikashvili and calls upon the law enforcement officers to qualify the incident in accordance to the law.

According to Saba Tsitsikashvili, on January 22, at about 12:00 pm two security policemen physically assaulted him in the building of Gori district administration.

The journalist tried to get reply about the requested public information at the chancellery of the district administration. Journalist has already appealed to the police regarding the incident and criminal case was launched on the fact.

Initiative group of Trade Union of Journalists considers the fact to be interference in the professional activities of the journalist which is crime envisaged under Article 153 of the Criminal Code of Georgia. The initiative group calls upon the law enforcement bodies to qualify the crime in accordance to the law.

Initiative Group of the Trade Union supports Saba Tsitsikashvili and calls upon the international organizations, which participated in the establishment of the Trade Union, to react on the incident.

Saba Tsitsikashvili is correspondent of the regional newspaper “Kartlis Khma” and non-governmental organization Human Rights Center.
