Alliance for Georgia Requests Criminal Investigation against Merabishvili and Gilauri

January 26, 2010

Alliance for Georgia requests to launch investigation about the crime which was supposedly committed by the minister of internal affairs Vano Merabishvili and prime-minister Nika Gilauri. Co-chairperson of the Alliance Sozar Subari stated about it at the press-conference on January 26.

Subari stated that TV-item released by the TV-Company “Kavkasia” in its program “Weekly Reportage” shows how officers of the Special Operative Department within the MIA beat old friend and former deputy of financial Minister Nika Gilauri Shapakidze and his companion. They were suspected in drug-addiction and storage of narcotic substances.

“On January 26, MIA imposed disciplinary charge over the SOD officer Davit Kobakhidze and fired him. However, in fact, it is not punishment of the offender but avoidance of the investigation and protecting real offender,” said Subari.

According to Subari, it was not disciplinary offence but grave crime which shall be charged under criminal law. More precisely, Davit Kobakhidze and other officers of SOD inhumanly treated and degraded the detainees.

“Nevertheless, the problem is much deeper and does not finish here. More precisely, it is agreement between Nika Gilauri and Vano Merabishvili for what offenders remained unpunished; they were only slightly rebuked. It is example of selective justice and the two ministers have committed serious crimes which are abusing power,” said Subari.

Sozar Subari added that in this case, it is abusing the power by governmental officials, degrading the injured person and trading by influence.

“If we collect charges envisaged of all these crimes, total length of the imprisonment shall be 25 years. We request the Minister of Justice of Georgia Zurab Adeishvili and chief prosecutor of Georgia to start the investigation on the crimes committed by Vano Merabishvili and Nika Gilauri,” said Subari.

He added that criminal prosecution shall be launched against Davit Kobakhidze and other policemen who degraded and arbitrarily released people suspected in the crime.

“We also request to start investigation against Simon Shapakidze and his companion for drug-addiction,” said Subari.
