Georgian Authority Granted Status of Secondary State Language to Abkhazian Language

February 2, 2010

Georgian authority granted status of second state language to Abkhazian language in Abkhazia. It is written in the state strategy “Inclusion through Cooperation” which is worked out by the Georgian authority for occupied territories.

“Abkhazians are citizens of Georgia. According to the Constitution of Georgia, together with Georgian language Abkhazian is official language in autonomous Republic of Abkhazia. Special attention will be paid to the respect, protection, development and popularization of Abkhazian language to improve conditions for Abkhazian-speakers,” it is said in the document.

Georgian authority approved this strategy on January 27. Active plan for strategy implementation will be completed in June.
