Republic Party Assesses the Statement of President As Cynical about Cultural Inheritance and Religion

February 11, 2010

Republican Party assessed the statement of the President to build beaches in Mtskheta as a next cynical statement about cultural inheritance and religion. It is mentioned in the statement which was released by the Culture Commission of the Republic Party of Georgia.

According to the statement, initiative of the President of Georgia to place entertainment centre (swimming pools, beach) in Mtskheta in the out-fail of the river Mtkvari and Aragvi is an example of cynical attitude of the government towards history, cultural inheritance and religion.

“It is known that exactly out-fail of the rivers Mtkvari and Aragvi was the place where saint Nino first baptized Georgian people into Christianity christened in the 4th century. So this place has unique importance in the history of Georgia and the government should realize that there are particularly holly places in Georgia and it is unacceptable to transform them into entertaining objects,” it was said in the statement.

According to this statement, Georgia has not expressed its position towards the decision of “UNESCO”, when in June 2009 historical memorials of Mtskheta were put on the special list of this organization - “Cultural inheritance is in danger”.

“This famous organization directly calls upon the government to pay attention to the land near the temple Jvari and use them so that monuments of world-wide importance should not be damaged. Instead solving the problem, initiative of President degrades the general national importance of Mtskheta as a spiritual capital of Georgia” it is said in the statement.

“Republic Party of Georgia” requests to stop unconscious policy of government towards cultural monuments and the holly places of the country and calls upon society to oppose similar initiatives which could disregard our national identity.
