February 16, 2010

According to the penitentiary department, health condition of the son of the late president Zviad Gamsakhurdia is stable. He is in the jail hospital of Gldani Prison N 8.

Representatives of the press-center of the penitentiary department state that Tsotne Gamsakhurdia looks fine and calm. He is not going to stop hunger-strike.

The son of the first president of Georgia has been on hunger-strike for the 53rd day already. His attorney Keti Bekauri said Tsotne Gamsakhurdia categorically refuses medical assistance of doctors. He does not eat but drinks only water.

Without food a person can live only one month but without water only 7-10 days.

The attorney reported that on February 13, Tsotne Gamsakhurdia twice fell in coma. But doctors assisted him to recover. Penitentiary department also confirms the fact and states Gamsakhurdia is under permanent observation of doctors.

On February 15, the attorney of the accused requested the document from the penitentiary department which confirms grave health conditions of Gamsakhurdia. The document shall be released by the head of the jail hospital Girogi Butliashvili. The attorney will take the document on February 18 at the trial earlier than it is envisaged by the law. According to the law, she had to get the document within 10 days.

Keti Bekauri is not sure that because of health conditions Tsotne Gamsakhurdia will not be able to attend the trial. In this direction, the document is very important to justify his absence. However, Bekauri claims that despite his health problems Gamsakhurdia wants to attend the trial.

Tsotne Gamsakhurdia is accused in the attempted murder and illegal purchase-possession and carriage of gun. He was accused under Article 315 of the Criminal Code of Georgia which envisages plotting against the constitutional government.

Tsotne Gamsakhurdia was arrested on October 27, 2009. His trial is scheduled at 1:30 pm on February 18.
