Human Rights Priority and Caucasian Women Network Will Send Appeal to Strasbourg Court

March 10, 2010

Non-governmental organizations Human Rights Priority and Caucasian Women Network are sending next suit to Strasbourg Court; their suit is about a woman from one of the villages in Gori district who was raped by armed harassers during the war in August of 2008.

The victim reported that four armed people, who were not ethnic Georgians, rushed into her house on August 13, 2008 and raped her.

The Human Rights Priority thinks several articles of the European Convention, as well as international humanitarian law were breached in regard with the women. In similar case, the government is entitled to protect its citizen from torture, inhuman and degrading treatment within its jurisdiction.

“Although government of Georgia could not effectively control the conflict zone at that time, similar crime could have been avoided before military activities started by warning and evacuating the population,” said the lawyers.

The lawyers state that they also sue the government of Russian Federation. More precisely, from August 11-12 Russian Federation was controlling the Georgian villages of Gori district where they could not ensure the public order in the territory. Thus, they are responsible for every crime committed in the villages at that time.
