Natural Disaster Threats Villages in Zestaponi District

March 29, 2010

In the first half of March, after the several-day bad weather people were evacuated from the villages of Kvaliti and Tsiplavake in Zestaponi district to avoid landslide.

The landslide fallen on the central motor-way in the village of Tsiplavake threats 15 families. According to Zestaponi district administration, reconstruction activities were carried out in the zones threatened with landslide in 2009. 8 000 GEL was allocated from the district budget for the purpose; however, the activities were not enough to avoid the natural disaster. The people still face danger. If the reconstruction activities do not start earlier, 350 families will be isolated from the environment.

The landslide damaged the house in the village of Kvaliti. The family with three members will shelter in alternative building for some time.

“I do not know what to do. If nobody assists us, we cannot resist the disaster?! The walls have fallen apart and it is impossible to live in the house. We have nowhere else to go,” said the owner of the house Givi Getsadze.

Two more houses are located in the dangerous zone. The houses will be reconstructed.

According to the Zestaponi district administration, the funds for the corresponding activities will be allocated from the reserve fund. However, neither these funds will be enough unless the central government assists them.
