Inmates Are Tortured in Geguti Prison

March 29, 2010

Three prisoners dead for the last two months – this is real statistic of the Geguti Prison N 8. Reportedly, all three cases were connected with the physical oppression on inmates by the prison administration.

Several days ago, MP Dimitri Lortkipanidze reported about it. He clarified that prisoners have been intimidated in custodies more often recently.

Former head of the Public Monitoring Commission of the Kutaisi Prison N 2 Manana Managadze confirmed the spread information. She said increased violence against prisoners has resulted from the abolishment of the public monitoring commission.

“We used to visit prisoners in the custody and observed what situation was there. We used to converse with inmates personally. Consequently, we could influence corresponding institutions to assist prisoners (ex. to take them to hospitals in the case of necessity). Today, it is impossible and consequently, more and more prisoners are assaulted,” said Managadze.

The Chief Prosecutor’s Office has not made official statement about the fact yet.
