Excitement About One Book Continues

May 10, 2010
On May 7, one more demonstration was organized in front of the Ilia State University to protect the freedom of expression. Soon after the demonstration started, one group of students went towards them by shouting and insulting and smashed their banner. However, the patrol policemen, who were mobilized on the place before the demonstration, took the attackers away from the place immediately.

“Today, we, students came here to protect our rights and constitution; we want to declare to the movement, which tends to be the fascist movement, that everybody has right of expression and students, as a most progressive part of the society, will protect these rights,” said a demonstrator, student of the Theatre University Giorgi Razmadze.

On the same day, opponents of the students requested the prohibition of the book by Erekle Deisadze.

“When a person writes disgusting things about mother and his holiness, I think it is horrible. We request to prevent similar facts. The book shall be prohibited and the printed house, which published it, shall be closed down as well,” said the member of the Egalitarian Institute Misha Meskhi.

In order to calm down the situation, the security guard of the university requested the demonstrators to leave the area. The demonstrators did not obey their request. Their opponents left the territory soon and joined the meeting of the Public Orthodox Movement in the Chess Palace.

The Palace was overcrowded. The clergymen and the members of the Union of Orthodox Parents attended the meeting. Politicians Jondi Baghaturia, Kakha Dzagania, Zviad Dzidziguri, Temur Shashiashvili and Mamuka Giorgadze also attended the meeting.

The leader of the Public Orthodox Movement Malkhaz Guliashvili made a speech at the meeting. Then, Father Davit prayed; after that students, statesmen and politicians made speeches too. Member of the Labor Party Kakha Dzagania made a political statement and it caused protest of the students.

At the end of the meeting, the attendees started the collect signatures against Liberty Institute. The Public Orthodox Movement read the declaration where they have listed 6 accusations against the Liberty Institute. The members of the POM stated they will collect signatures not only in Tbilisi but throughout Georgia.
