DEC Persecutes Opposition Party Member on Political Grounds

The Human Rights Center assesses the administrative proceeding against the member of the Alliance for Georgia Zurab Danelishvili launched by the Gurjaani DEC as a persecution on political grounds. The human rights organization calls upon the DEC to stop the administrative proceeding immediately.
“Member of the Gurjaani DEC from the National Movement Nino Odishelidze wrote complaint on Zurab Danelishvili. Odishelidze wrote that she entered the polling station # 47 (Danelishvili requests to annul election results at the PS # 47) at 8:22 pm and found chaos there. Odishelidze said Danelishvili was giving directives to the commission members loudly and the commission members were very astonished, they were shouting and could not count the votes properly. In fact, after opening the ballot box, it was discovered that commission members had not signed the control paper and Danelishvili demanded to stop counting process, to seal up the box and send it to the DEC; it irritated the commission members,” statement of the Human Rights Center.
According to the Center, Article 12631 of the Election Code envisages fine on the observer, election constituent or representative of the media source if they breach the Article 70, Part II – “b” and “d” of the Code.
“Having studied the case materials on Zurab Danielashvili we concluded that he had not influenced the voters’ decision and did not wear symbols of any election constituent. Consequently, the administrative charge against him is a political persecution and oppression to threaten him not to use the lawful mechanisms against the violations he observed,” statement of the human rights organization.
