Spanish Police Arrested Shakro Kalashov

June 7, 2010

Spanish police arrested the leader of the Georgian criminal gang Shakro Kalashov. Foreign news agencies reported that Spanish court sentenced Kalashov to 7, 5-year-imprisonment for money laundering and imposed fine of 20 million Euros on him though he was not arrested yet. Kalashov was detained only after Georgian authority requested Spain to extradite him to the native country.

Attorney of Kalashov Javier Gomes De Liano stated that he is ready to appeal against the court decision.

In June of 2005 Spanish police carried out special operation “Wasp” and arrested citizens of Russia, Georgia and Ukraine; they were members of Kalashov’s criminal gang. Kalashov himself managed to shelter United Arab Emirates; though in 2006 he was arrested and deported to Spain.

Spanish prosecutor’s office blames Shakro Kalashov (with the nickname Shakro Maladoi) in the establishment of a criminal gang whose members laundered the criminal money with the support of the network of companies working in Spain. More than ten companies are mentioned in the bill of particulars against Kalashov where the money was laundered.

In 2008, Spanish newspaper El Pais evaluated Kalashov’s property with 200 million Euro. He controlled three casinos in Moscow; he owned shares in the petrol company “LuckOil”; he had real estate in Spain with the price of 7, 5 million Euros.

In March of 2010 law enforcement officers of seven European states carried out large-scale operation against Georgian criminal gang in Europe. They arrested about 80 gang members. 25 of them were arrested in Austria, 24 – in Spain, 17 – in Germany. The detainees were charged in various crimes – starting from extortion ended with drug-dealing.

Besides that, the detainees stole expensive cosmetics, drinks and then sold them.

Several days ago, the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Georgia suppressed unprecedented narcotic-transit from South America to Europe via Georgia. The organizers are Shakro Kalashov and his ally Nugzar Bochorishvili.

Nugzar Bochorishvili was sentenced to pretrial detention in his absence and he is internationally sought. Georgian law enforcement officials negotiated with Spanish colleagues regarding the extradition of Shakro Kalashov and Nugzar Bochorishvili.
