Experts of International Criminal Court in Tbilisi

June 23, 2010
On June 23, the experts of the International Criminal Court (ICC) arrived in Tbilisi. They will hold official meetings in the framework of the preliminary analysis of the Russian-Georgian war.

Hague based International Criminal Court carries out preliminary survey of the accidents which occurred during the Russian-Georgian armed conflict in 2008. The working group has already visited Tbilisi several times. The Prosecutor of the International Criminal Court also intends to arrive in Georgia.

The officials of the Prosecutor’s Office of Georgia stated that the ICC experts group visited Georgia on June 23 and they have planned several meetings. They will learn information about the on-going investigation regarding the Russian-Georgian war.

The Prosecutor’s Office of the ICC carries out preliminary survey on possible crimes committed during Russian-Georgian war. The state of Georgia and local non-governmental organizations provide the prosecutor’s office with corresponding information. One of the NGOs is the Human Rights Center which provides the ICC prosecutor’s office with the updated information.

Representative of the Human Rights Center Ana Natsvlishvili stated that unless the rapid and transparent investigation is carried out on local level, the ICC will switch to investigation from the stage of the preliminary analyze.

She added that one week after the Russian-Georgian war, the ICC prosecutor stated they got interested in the conflict and started preliminary analyze of the facts.

According to Natsvlishvili, the ICC has studied 5 similar cases. Currently, it works on civil controversy in Kenya; it studies war and other crimes and requests criminal liability of offenders. The ICC Prosecutor has recently ordered to arrest the Sudan President.
