Free Trade Union of Teachers and Scientists Blame Minister of Education in Oppression

June 24, 2010
On June 23, representatives of the Free Trade Union of Teachers and Scientists of Georgia complained about interference and hindering of their activities and discrediting facts against them at the press-conference. Chairwoman of the TU Manana Ghurchumelidze stated that after the minister of education made a statement on June 8 during his meeting with school directors, the teachers have not transferred membership fees to the TU account.  85% of their income is from membership fees. Because of lack of income, salaries of 350 people will be reduced and part of 350 people will go on unpaid holidays. International organizations and teachers federations of other countries will support the organization to maintain financial stability.

Lawyer of the Trade Union Maia Liparteliani spoke about the oppression facts on organization members. She said the minister of education and science Dimitri Shashkin wrote letters to the leaders of education resource-centers and directors of public schools and prohibited them to cooperate with organizations and journalists without the permission from the ministry. She added that teachers are prohibited to meet teachers.

“The minister threatened school directors with criminal liability if they still transfer membership fees to the accounts of the Trade Union. He said that ready money shall not be circulated at schools (he said, he would not allow the members of the TU to collect money among member teachers). The minister threatened school directors that unless they obey his directives, criminal liability will be imposed on them,” said the statement.

The press-conference turned into a round-table. The members and journalists of the Human Rights Center and other human rights organizations attended the meeting.
