Law Enforcement Officers Detained Suspects In the Support of Criminals, Among Them Football Player Giorgi Demetradze

July 9, 2010
Officers of the Tbilisi Main Department of the MIA and Counter-Terrorist Center detained several people suspected in the support of criminals in Tbilisi.

The Ministry of Internal Affairs reported that detainees follow the criminal traditions and they are: Davit Gagnidze, Giorgi Demetradze and Kakha Misireli. The law enforcement officers withdrew 40 700 USD from the detainees. They had received the money from a person who had lost 140 000 USD with Davit Peikrishvili in the unofficial bet about the ongoing football championship.

According to the investigation, Vato Kipiani, who was convicted in the past, called Davit Gagnidze, Giorgi Demetradze and Kakha Misireli from Ukraine and tried to get the rest of the money through criminal negotiations. They wanted to transfer part of the money to the so-called “obshiak” (money collected for influential criminals).

Vato Kipiani had already taken 30 000 USD in the Ukraine and tried to give the rest 40 700 USD to Davit Peikrishvili; the abovementioned people were arrested during the transfer procedures.

The investigation was launched under Article 223′ Part I of the Criminal Code of Georgia. During the search a fire-gun “Glok” was discovered on Kakha Misireli and fire-guns “Mauzer” and “Ierikho”, hand-mines and military bullets were discovered in his house. Since Vakhtang Kipiani is in Ukraine he was charged under Article 223′ Part I of the Criminal Code of Georgia in absence.

Tbilisi Main Department of the MIA is carrying out the investigation.
