Batumi City Hall VS Street Traders

July 14, 2010
The Supervising Department of the Batumi City Hall, with the support of the police force, urge street traders to leave the area near the Public School # 23 in Batumi. The street traders are blocking the road for school children. In response, the street traders request alternative space for their activities.

“It is now summer holidays for school so how can we block pupils? During the school-term nobody ordered us to leave the area because it was a pre-election period. We do not receive salaries like they do but we do feel hunger the same. Thus, they should think of that before depriving us from the right to earn money,” said one of the traders.

Approximately 50 traders have worked between the school fence and Tsereteli Street for many years. It is the only source of income for them and most are using it to support families that are socially disabled.

The traders have petitioned the Batumi City Hall and Mayor Robert Chkhaidze to allow them to trade near the school until the new school term starts. Afterwards they would like to be given an alternative space.

The Human Rights Center attempted to contact the head of the supervision department of the Batumi City Hall, Davit Davitadze. However, he did not answer our calls.
