Statement of Human Rights Priority How the Georgian State Congratulates Human Rights Defenders with International Day of Human Rights

December 14, 2009

Public Broadcasting Company celebrated the International Day of Human Rights by “exposing” human rights organization. On December 10, one of the main topics of the 8:00 pm news program of the PB was warning of entire Georgian population against trusting human rights defenders; the journalists called upon the society “to expose illegal activities” of human rights defenders and more precisely, of the Human Rights Priority.

The news-release of December 10 reported that Human Rights Priority offered cabal agreements to the residents of Ergneti village to appeal to the European Court of Human Rights and how it extorts 100 000 Euro from them if the victim side decides not to file a suit.

The Human Rights Priority states that Georgian society learned about non-professionalism, extortion and cabal activities of the organization on December 10 by the information reported by the PB. The society was taught not to trust the organization and not to apply to human rights defenders for help. On the other hand, if it is necessary, people were suggested to cooperate with the government in order to prevent everybody from appealing against the government of Georgia about the war in August of 2008.”

We, human rights defenders from the Human Rights Priority, “express our gratitude” towards the Public Broadcasting for having released reliable information about us and towards those who ordered to prepare similar TV-item because the latter “is fully aware of” the human rights situation in Georgia.

The government of Georgia celebrated the International Day of Human Rights in similar way for the first time and organized a training course for the population and informed them who is real enemy of Georgia – a suitor against the government, human rights defenders or both. We learned about the content and spirit of the TV-item after Keti Bojgua, the author of the item, called our office and asked: “Aren’t you the organization who has appealed against the government of Georgia?” Similar attitude of the journalists made us to record the interview in order to expose what was said during the interview and how it would be later shown on TV. We recorded the interview with Lia Mukhashavria, the head of the organization, by amateur video-camera which will be soon posted together with the “high-quality video-interview prepared by the PB” on our website in near future.

Please, send us your opinions and positions about the situation in order to protect the human rights defenders together.
