Human Rights Center condemns Physical Assault of Temur Tskhovrebov in the Tskhinvali Region

July 26, 2010
On July 24th, in the territory of South Ossetia, Temur Tskhovrebov, famous Ossetian activist and editor of the magazine “21th century” was physically assaulted by a group of people. Those responsible inflicted serious physical injuries on Tskhovrebov.

The incident took place in Ttskhinvali, on Kharebov Street. According to the acquaintances of the victim, members of the South Ossetian de facto parliament, Kazmir Pliev, Dimitri Vaneev and Alan Khasiev were participants in the attack.

Supposedly, the motive for the incident was a statement made by Temur Tskhovrebov at the Georgian-Ossetian forum held by the NGO “IKV Pax Chridti.” According to his statement, Temur Tskhovrebov was urging conflict participants to open up the administrative borders of South Ossetia. A friend and colleague of Temur Tskhovrebov, Besarion Aseevi, believes that the physical assault is connected to this statement. He has also stated that Kazimir Plievi, a member of de facto parliament of South Ossetia, had been calling his colleague for two days and threatening to kill him.

Tskhovrebov was called a traitor by an official of The De Facto Republic of South Ossetia, Boris Chachievi.

The Georgian-Ossethian forum was held in the city of Leiden on July 11-16th, 2010. The participants made a declaration addressing both sides participating in Geneva talks. The declaration was urging them to fix the humanitarian problems of the population without any political or status related preconditions.

The Human Rights Center condemns the violent acts committed against the representatives of civil society and the journalist, Temur Tskhovrebov, and calls for an effective and objective investigation by the de facto government authorities.
