Presidential Press Service Explanation on Mikheil Saakashvili’s Racist Expressions

July 29, 2010
The Press Service of the President of Georgia released an explanation on the expressions used by the president at a Finance Ministry.

According to the information given by the Presidential Press Service, the expressions made by the President of Georgia have nothing to do with any race and were not used in the context of racist discrimination.

“The Presidential Press Service expresses its concern that the Georgian expression used by President Mikheil Saakashvili, which were not used in a racist context, and as a rule are not used in this kind of a context, were purposely interpreted incorrectly and given a racist connotation by some information sources,’’ declared the Presidential Press Service.

The President of Georgia rebuked some government officials for Customs Service problems and asked them to better conduct their duties. “This is who brings shame to the Republic. I didn’t want to use this Armenian expression, but this is true,’’ stated Saakashvili.

The President used the offensive term while addressing Nika Gilauri and the Revenue Service director, George Tskhakaia. He asked if their luggage had ever been checked when visiting European States. After receiving a negative answer, the President asked, “Then are we niggers? Why are we acting like savages?’’
