The US Department of State – “Country reports on terrorism 2009”

August 9, 2010
The people, goods and the potentially dangerous items have been imported in Abkhazia and so called South Ossetia, states US Department of State report “country reports on terrorism 2009.”
The document states, that the situation has not changed much in the separatist regions of Abkhazia and so called South Ossetia. Georgia can’t control the border between these regions and Russia. According to the assessments made by the authors, this insufficient control gives rise to an uncontrollable rotation at the border of de-facto republics and Russian Federation.
“The administrative borders of the conflict zones were completely militarized in 2009, when the Russian Security Service took over. The transportation on these lines are strictly controlled, though, the official customs control, security inspection and other antiterrorist procedures are not operating,” – states the report.
The same document notes, that Georgia still supports US efforts against terrorism. Particularly, the chapter concerning Georgia talks about the participation of Georgian soldiers and the whole Georgian side in the Afghanistan ISAF operation.
Also, it states that the accusation against Georgia made by Russia was groundless. According to the accusation, Chechnya terrorists were sheltering in Pankisi Valley. Authors of the the report think, that the border protection, fight against corruption, money laundering, drug and gun illegalities remain to be the priorities of Georgian government.
