Deployment of S-300 Air-Defense Systems in Abkhazia to Endanger Stability – John Bass

August 12, 2010
Deployment of S-300 air-defense systems in Abkhazia will endanger the security of the region, US Ambassador to Georgia John Bass said.
According to the Ambassador, he got information regarding the issue from the press, which means that information about developments in Abkhazia is not accessible.
The US Ambassador appeals to Russia to implement the 12 August ceasefire agreement.
"We do not have any information on whether this is a new anti-aircraft missile, or whether it was placed there a long time ago. This once again underscores the difference in the positions of Tbilisi and Sukhumi regarding arms transparency. The Tbilisi leadership has repeatedly demonstrated openness in contrast to Sukhumi. So we do not know what's going on. We call on Russia to implement all of the conditions of the ceasefire agreement dated Aug. 12, 2008, and to withdraw its troops from the occupied territory," he said.
The Commander-in-Chief of the Russian military air force Alexander Zelin announced yesterday that the Russian Federation deployed C-300 anti-air strike system devices in the occupied territories of Abkhazia.
