The boarding school for children with celebral paralysis to be closed

Gurjaani boarding school is the only institution in Georgia where children with celebral paralysis study. The children go through special medical treatment there as well. According to the decision of the Ministry of Education, the boarding school will be closed in September.

“In the middle of July, the commission from the General Education Program Department of the Ministry of Education visited under the leadership of Lali Ebanoidze. They examined the boarding school and while leaving declared that it will be closed in September. We asked about the fate of children, but received no answer,” – stated the boarding school officials.

“I agree with the decision of the Ministry of Education regarding the abolishment of the boarding school. What’s bad in that? These children will move to public schools where the inclusive studying takes place. These children need to be integrated in the society,” – says the director of the boarding school Marina Chuchulashvili.

According to the pediatrician of the boarding school, Ana Qadagashvili, some children have severe form of celebral paralysis, puerperal trauma and Down syndrome. “Some children can’t even talk or move independently. They won’t be able to study in the frameworks of the normal public school programs. Some can’t even count till ten. They elementarily won’t be able to go to school,” – indicated the pediatrician.

According to the statement of the Minister of Education, Dimitri Shashkini, leaving children in a place where no normal conditions are met, is absolutely inadmissible.

“We made this decision considering the interests of children. Except for their own problems, the boarding school was adding up domestic problems. No conditions for normal studying, living, no rehabilitation of children,” – stated Shashkini. According to him, with the help of UN children’s fund, the rehabilitation of the building already took place in Tbilisi, where the children with limited abilities will be transferred.

It should be indicated, that the boarding school was well financed from the state budget. Numerous times, different non-governmental and international organizations provided rather large amount of money. According to one of the versions, the money provided for the assistance of the boarding school was spent unpurposefully.
