The UN General Assembly adopted resolution on the right of return for all IDPs and their descendants from Georgian breakaway regions, including Abkhazia and South Ossetia, regardless their ethnicity, reports the official web-site of UN.

The resolution expresses concern regarding the region’s demographic change as a result of violent conflict.

“It reaffirms the unacceptability of forced demographic changes,” – states the UN General Assembly resolution.

Also by the text, the Assembly emphasized the importance of preserving the property rights of refugees and internally displaced persons, including victims of reported “ethnic cleansing”, and called upon all Member States to deter persons under their jurisdiction from obtaining property within the territory of Abkhazia, Georgia, in violation of the rights of returnees.
50 states voted in favor of resolution, 17 against and 86 abstained.
The General Assembly discussed the following topic: “Protracted conflicts in the GUAM (Georgia, Ukraine, Azerbaijan, Moldova) area and their implications for international peace, security and development.”
The name of resolution initiated by Georgia is “The state of IDPs and Refugees from Abkhazia, Georgia and Tskhinvali Region, Georgia.”
Finland, with other countries, supported Georgia at the UN General Assembly. This was reported by the Finish Foreign Minister Alexander Stubb while on his official visit in Tbilisi.
He recalled the events of 2008 when he witnessed how the elders were taken out of the conflict zone by two trucks.

“This scene heavily impacted me. We need to do everything to bring these people back to their homes. The UN General Assembly resolution is a step forward for this process,” – stated Alexander Stubb.

According to him, the conflict resolution covers three phases: first – tension, the second – easing, and the third – the conflict resolution. The third path is one of the hardest and longest processes.

“Our representative in UN does everything to help Georgia resolve the conflict. There’s a format of Geneva talks which is very important. Georgia needs to continue economic modernization that will help to draw to EU, become its member and lastly, Georgia and Russia should definitely sit on the negotiation table,” – stated Alexander Stubb.

“International society took verdict for Russia,” – this was the evaluation given to the adoption of resolution project initiated by Georgia by the Georgian Ministry of Foreign Affairs Grigol Vashadze.

According to Grigol Vashadze, resolution was adopted by 50 votes against 17. So Russia lost two more votes.

“International society took verdict for Russia with this act. The resolution is the part of Georgia’s attempts to give chance to IDPs to go back to their homes and return their property,” – states Grigol Vashadze.

The Minister noted that this resolution exactly reflects the resolution that was presented by Georgia last year, though it was not adopted back then.

“The attitude of international community is clearly emphasized. International community has a singlehanded position concerning Russians’ acts and nobody restrains from making it known anymore,” – noted the head of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
