Rector of Telavi State University Resigned

September 9, 2010
Gela Mtivlishvili, Kakheti

The rector of Iakob Gogebashvili Telavi State University George Gotsiridze resigned. The academic council of university rendered his request on September the 8th. Gotsiridze states that he’s tired of working at this post. According to Human Rights Center, George Gotsiridze was called to the Ministry of Education and Science a day before the resignation that resulted in this decision.

As the university officials stated to us, they found out about Gotsiridze’s decision in the morning when he submitted his resignation request in the chancellery. “As it turns out, he’d come back late from the Ministry and never came back to university. He came here in the morning and in couple of minutes we learned that he wrote a request. He never thought of resignation before visiting Ministry. On the contrary, the academic council elections are planned for September, new academic year is starting and we are actively preparing,” – noted university officials.

The members of academic council are not giving comments on the resignation of the rector.

Zura Rainauli: “Don’t bother me. I’m not obligated to give a comment.”

Ia Jimshitashvili: “without comments.”

The duties of the university rector will be performed by the deputy rector David Makhashvili. Makhashvili is not giving comments either: “I can’t tell you anything, ask George Gotsiridze yourself,” – noted Makhashvili.

George Gotsiridze, the former rector of Telavi State University: “There’s so much work in the university and we’re spending so much time for answering the complaints submitted to the different departments. I got tired of all this. They were blaming me in everything. I was asking the Ministry of Education to give me consent for resignation and finally they did.”

According to lawyers, according to the Law of Higher Education, the appointment and resignation of rectors is determined by the academic council of the university, and as a rule, this doesn’t have to do anything with the Ministry of Education. Though, according to them, exactly the individuals accepted by the Ministry of Education are assigned on the posts of rector of higher education institutions, according to their instruction and license.

It should be noted that before the resignation of Telavi State University rector, the rector of Ivane Javakhishvili Tbilisi State University Gia Khubua and Zaza Tsotniashvili, rector of Gori State University were resigned.
