Mamuka Areshidze Doesn’t Exclude the Danger of the Special Operation in Pankisi

September 9, 2010
“At this phase, the danger of the special operation with the purpose of annihilation of combatants in Pankisi valley doesn’t exist, but there’s a serious danger that Russia could be preparing for this,” – states the expert of Caucasia Studies, Mamuka Areshidze commenting on the statement made by Nikolai Simakov, the deputy director of the Main Agency of Caucasia Federal Region.

“It’s important that while talking about the camps of combatants in Georgia, Kremlin never indicates their geographical location. So, this is part of the big PR campaign carried out against Georgia. The constant calling that there are groups of combatants in Georgia relates to the attempt of tarnishing its image in front of the international community,” – states Areshidze.

“Russian side is blaming Georgia in preparation of terrorists,” – stated the deputy director of the Main Agency of Caucasia Federal Region in the interview to the newspaper Russia Today (Vremya Novostei).

According to Simakov, the “combatants” operating in Northern Caucasia go through trainings in the special camps in Georgian territory.
