Traders and IDPs Protest Demonstration Near Tbilisi City Hall

September 9, 2010
On September 9, IDPs and traders held protest demonstration in front of the president’s residence in Avlabari district of Tbilisi. Demonstrators requested meeting with the president to resolve their problems. The special petition of the League of Street Traders and civil movement of IDPs was sent to the president.

An IDP Lira Tsurtsumia stated that during their meeting with the president they will raise question of accommodation of IDPs. She said the president should discuss the question of those IDPs who have not received accommodation at all.

The traders want to allow them to trade in the street. One of them Eugenia Chachanidze said that only president can resolve this question. She added that they remained with no income after the street-trading was prohibited. She spent her last 1 lari to get to the place of protest demonstration and does not know how to keep the family now.

Aleko Shalamberidze from the People’s Party and Lasha Chkhartishvili supported the protest demonstration as usually.

The next protest demonstration of street traders will be held next Tuesday at 12:00 pm near the City Hall.

Lasha Chkhartishvili stated that they will request the city mayor Gigi Ugulava to keep his promises to the traders. He promised the people to resolve the street-trading problem.

Besides this request, the protesters want to get answer to their petition to the city hall. More precisely, Chkhartishvili requested information about those agencies which belong to the city hall.
