Irakli Alasania: “Alarming Situation in Samegrelo”

September 14, 2010
Irakli Alasania is asking for a meeting with the Minister of Regional Development and Infrastructure and the general director of Public Broadcaster Giorgi Chanturia. This was stated on September 13th briefing by the leader of “Our Georgia – Free Democrats” Irakli Alasania. Alasania summarized his visit to Zugdidi, Chkhorotsyu, Tsalenjikha and Senaki region villages on September 9-10th and stated that Samegrelo is in alarming situation.

“The main problem of the village Lesichine of Chkhorowyu region is the loss experienced from the drought. In this village, like in most of the villages of Samegrelo, the corn harvest is practically destroyed. If we consider that this crop is the main food for Samegrelo population, it’ll be obvious that they are facing starvation for this winter. And the government is not thinking about intervention and provision of subsidies.

According to him, the problem of land legalization remains in the region. Free Democrats think that Georgia needs strong agricultural strategy which doesn’t exist. According to Alasania, the governors of Samegrelo region villages admit that this problem is really serious and the organs of self-governing organs practically don’t have any mechanisms for solving the matters connected to the land legalization.

According to Alasania, the residents of Chkhorowyu region noted that only National Movement members and its activists have jobs in the region, and the IDPs from Abkhazia compactly settled in the region are expecting eviction from their residence places.

“There are similar problems in the town Jvari, Senaki, Tsalenjikha and Zugdidi. In the village Chaladidi of Senaki reigon, the population doesn’t have water in the 21st century. The water pressure device has been buil. 80000 lari was spent on its construction, but the pipes were not completed. Thousands of laris were provided from the budget for fixing the village fury, but fury has not been repaired yet,” – states Alasania.

According to him, he wants to meet the Minister of regional development and hear his explanations concerning the situation in Samegrelo. Alasania is convinced that almost the same problems exist in other regions of Georgia, though he’ll get busy concretely with the solution of Samegrelo region problems. As for the other regions, he’ll report to government after visiting these places.

As for the meeting with the general director of Public Broadcaster Gia Chanturia, according to Alasania, Samegrelo doesn’t broadcast the second channel, which, as a rule, should cover all the activities of opposition. The limited number of newspapers is sold. The leader of Free Democrats plants to meet with Gia Chanturia and hear his explanation.
