Photo-Reporter Iuri Mechitov about Publication of the Magazine “Tabula”

September 21, 2010
Famous photo-reporter Iuri Mechitov responded to the letter “182 Supporters of Fascism” which was published in the magazine “Tabula”. The Human Rights Center also received the following letter from Mechitov:

“I want to respond to the letter “182 Supporters of Fascism” which was published in the 23rd edition of the magazine “Tabula”. I, together with other people, am blamed in the support of fascism in Georgia and generally I am called to be the source of all disasters in our country.

“There are so many groundless accusations in this short appeal that I do not think they are worth to pay attention; however, in any liberal state the author of similar accusations shall be appealed at court.

“Any kind of religious extremism is categorically unacceptable for me. I am sure most of those 181 listed people also oppose the violation of this fundamental right of a person. Besides that, we should be aware that careless attitude towards the century-long traditions of the country is the best soil for similar extremism.

“In our appeal to the president of Georgia we requested to stop criminal prosecution against Gulashvili and his under-age son. We cannot understand why certain people identify it with fascism. As well, we cannot understand the position of the editorial board of the “Tabula” which shares the absurd accusation against us which was exposed in the artificial decoration of their appeal-pages. We were particularly impressed by the picture of golden bars which can convince the reader that those 182 people were bribed.

“I think this letter against fascism in fact aims at splitting the society and further terrorizing them; it is designed according to the best traditions of the Bolsheviks. Unfortunately, we cannot get liberated from the terrible practice of dark past in seeking the enemies inside and outside of the state.”

“Do those 567 people, who undersigned the collective accusation, support the new totalitarism which will be camouflaged by liberalism?”
