The Human Rights Center Establishes Town Councils in Akhmeta and Kvareli Districts

The Human Rights Center will implement a new project in Kakheti region with the financial support of the Foundation “Open Society – Georgia”. In the framework of the project, the town councils will be set up in Akhmeta and Kvareli districts.

The project aims to introduce legal forms of public participation, to increase communication between the population and the members of the municipal board, to involve population in the activities of the municipal board and to make the municipal board transparent.

The representatives of the Kakheti office of the Human Rights Center state that in the framework of the project, population of more than 40 villages in Kvareli and Akhmeta district will be informed about the activities of the municipal board and their rights in the implementation of the self-governance; special mechanisms will be worked out for the participation of the people – particularly young generation – in the activities of the municipal board. The involvement of the local population in the activities of the municipal board will create successful precedent of the solution of local problems in order to encourage the residents of other villages to carry out similar activities.

The Human Rights Center monitors, documents and supports improvement of human rights situation in Georgia. Besides that, it regularly reports to the EU, Council of Europe, OSCE, UN, ICC and other international organizations about the human rights situation in Georgia.
