USA Supports Russia’s Integration into WTO While they Still Consider Abkhazia and South Ossetia Occupied.

October 18, 2010
USA supports Russia’s integration into WTO, but considers the presence of Russian militaries in the territory of Abkhazia and South Ossetia to be an occupation. According to Itar-Tas, US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton stated this while making a speech in a non-commercial organization “Commonwealth Club.”

“Russia has opened up its territory for transit lethal weapons and equipment into Afghanistan. Russia is working with us on counterterrorism, counter narcotics”, - Clinton mentioned.

Besides, Secretary of State spoke about the problems in Russia-USA relations and noted that human rights are still being violated in Russia.

As Itar-Tas reports, this is not the first criticism voiced by US Secretary of State about the repression of human rights in Russia. In 2009, while Clinton presented annual report on human rights, she stated that civil liberty exists in Russia in forms of remnants. She spoke about intensifying pressure by government over its citizens regarding Russian-Georgian conflict. She also mentioned disability of Russian government to investigate murders of journalists, namely, the case of Ana Politkovskaya.

Russia has been trying to become member of WTO since 1993. But it gained USA’s principal agreement only in this year.

Itar-tas informs that Georgia’s Prime Minister Nika Gilauri said on October 7 that Tbilisi would support Russia’s integration into WTO only after the joint customs control is established in respect with Abkhazia and South Ossetia.
