Georgia On the 100th Place in Press Freedom Index

October 20, 2010
Georgia occupied the 100th place in the Press Freedom Index – the survey carried out by the international organization “Reporters Without Border.” Last year, Georgia occupied the 81st place on the list.

Finland, Iceland, the Netherlands, Norway and Sweden have occupied the first five places in the index.

The organization does not make any clarification about Georgia expect placing it on the list of freedom index.

The statement on the official website of the organization states that economic development, institutional reform and respect for fundamental rights do not necessarily go hand in hand.

“The examples of this trend are Russia, China, India and Brazil. Russia is place at 140th this year. Despite an astonishingly vibrant and active blogosphere, China is among the states with negative trend.  The organization is concerned about the deteriorating press freedom situation in states of the European Union and they risk losing their position as world leader in respect for human rights,” the statement of Reporters Without Borders secretary-general Jean-François Julliard.

The Philippines, Ukraine, Greece and Kyrgyzstan all fell sharply in this year’s index.

The organization also published list of the states where the situation is the most deteriorating. Eritrea, North Korea and Turkmenistan are on the top of this list.

This was the ninth annual index of the international organization.
