Dutch Citizen Protests Compulsory Treatment in Mental Hospital

October 27, 2010
Dutch citizen Marcel Maria Brands protests deportation from Georgia and compulsory treatment in Tbilisi mental hospital.

Marcel Maria Brands, who is in mental hospital in Asatiani Street in Tbilisi, reported to the Interpresnews that he has been running business in Georgia for 12 years already and he frequently visits Tbilisi. According to him, on October 4, the police officers physically assaulted and insulted him during the incident in the supermarket “Populi” in the Third Massive in Tbilisi; afterwards he was taken to mental hospital.

“I was dismissed from hospital next day. I went to “Populi” again and when the shop-assistants saw me, they called police and took me to mental hospital again; there, compulsory treatment was imposed on me and doctors made injections to me,” said Marcel Maria Brands.

Dutch man added that Tbilisi City Court concluded to deport him from Georgia for one year because of the incident in Populi supermarket. Marcel Maria Brands does not agree with the court conclusion. “I am not crazy. They compel me to be here. I would have left Georgia immediately after the incident in Populi and being insulted there but not for a long time because I have a girl-friend here. Besides that, here I successfully run business and if I do not arrive in Georgia for one year, I might face some problems in my business,” said Marcel Maria Brands.

Attorney of the Dutch patient Mamuka Basilashvili said that his client is calm and handicapped person. After he was compelled to take treatment at mental hospital, his health conditions worsened.

“We intend to appeal against the decision of the Tbilisi City Court at the Appeal Court in order not to deport him from Georgia for one year,” said the attorney.

The personnel of the Tbilisi mental hospital also confirmed that Marcel Maria Brands is a calm person. He has spent two weeks in hospital for compulsory treatment as it was decided by the court.

Marcel Maria Brands is 49-years-old journalist. He is isolated from other patients. He is allowed to write and to call on the phone.
