Floor Fell Down in the Recently-Renovated School

November 11, 2010
Marika Vacharadze, Khoni

Public school in the village of Kukhi in Khoni district is one of those which were renovated with the financial support of the state budget. Several days ago, the floor fell down on the second floor during the lesson. Luckily nobody was in the area at that time! After the parquet was removed from the floor, the wooden material was found completely rotten. Specialists say the material was damaged by paving wet parquet on it.

Khoni district administration announced competition on the renovation of the school in April of 2009. Several companies participated in the competition and Ltd “Kokhta 2006”, registered in Asatiani 111 in Kutaisi, won the competition; their budget was 167 000 GEL and it was designed for the replacement of window-frames and for the renovation of the floor and the roof in the school. The Kokhta 2006 started activities at the end of June and finished on September 15. They are responsible for the quality of the implemented work throughout three years.

Tamaz Gogsadze, director of the Kokhta 2006: “We have agreed with the Khoni district administration on everything and the school year will start in the school. To tell the truth, our company was seriously damaged. However, we have not estimated the sum yet. Initially, the parquet shall be removed and we should see what was problem. Then, we will calculate and find out how many materials we will need and what funds will be necessary for it. We have agreed with the school administration and local authority that we will not pave the laminate parquet this time. We will use ordinary wooden boards which will get dry till spring and then we will cover it with laminate parquet. As for the roof, we do not have the materials of the good quality any more. So, the wind easily removed it. We will repair the roof and the water will not leak into it any longer. The school will not stop education process.”

Lali Barabidze, director of Kukhi public school: “After the second lesson a pupil ran in the corridor and the floor fell down. Everything was caused by badly done job. So, the floor shall be completely removed and they will see every fault. We have stopped process for one week and informed the education resource center about it; but we are going to renew the process in two shifts in a week on the ground floor; we do not want children to go to other school because of these problems.

Zurab Jibukhaia, Khoni District Governor: “I personally visited the school and saw ongoing renovation activities. Last year, the school was thoroughly reconstructed; the windows, doors, roof and floor were replaced. Unfortunately, the floor fell down. We got in touch with the building company whose directors arrived and saw everything. They promised to repair the roof and the floor soon. The Kokhta 2006 will cover the expenses.”

The company has already started renovation of the roof. However, they have not brought the materials for the floor yet. Where and how the schooling process will continue? The head of the Khoni district education resource center Nana Kakabadze did not answer to this question. She said the education ministry has not ordered or accepted the renovation activities. Despite that, she had informed the representative of the education ministry about the incident in Kukhi public school.

About 250 pupils learn in Kukhi public school. The schooling process has already renewed. The lessons are held on the ground floor and in auxiliary building. Workers of the “Kokhta 2006” started reconstruction after 3:00 pm.
