Water Problem Brings Division among Countrymen

November 15, 2010
In the village Kheta of Khobi municipality about 80 families have not had drinking water for four months now. Some Kheta residents use artesian well, but as they said, the well water is not good and it often poisons people. Some people bring water from far.

According to the residents, after rehabilitation of water pipes, the water provision improved, but several months ago, the water barrier was constructed at the main building of water-line that left many people without water. This is when the dispute started among the residents. Nochkhonia district residents are requesting removal of this pipe so both districts will have equal water provision. They submitted this request to the relevant services several times, but with no results.

“Water problem troubles us. For the whole year, sometimes we don’t have water for the whole year. We have to accumulate water in the ditches and pools. The well water is unfit for health. It often poisons children. We addressed the leadership of region to solve our problem but nobody helps us. Salatario and Sagabravo district residents located water barrier above the central road that stops water and it can’t reach us. The former water pool was conducted by our district residents. We are asking the village procurator and the deputies to solve this problem. We can’t fight Gabravas and Latarias,” – told us Nana Dzidzaria, one of the residents of Nochkhoni district.

The village procurator Gocha Shanava visited people at the protest rally and promised them to solve their problem: ,,Kheta is problematic village in terms of water provision since the water debit does not meet the requirements of population. The water pipes have been constructed 40-45 years ago. They are damaged and needs urgent replacement. By the village support program, the pipes were replaced in the several districts. The rehabilitation expenses will be envisaged in the next year’s budget. Before 2017, we have planned the replacement of pipes at 36 km road that will solve the problem. The issue that caused the problem is almost solved. The water barrier will definitely be removed next week. Then we won’t have to talk about anything.”

If the problem of Nochkhonya district residents is not solved on time, they are threatening with blocking the central road. Khobi service center of water provision states that the removing of water barrier won’t solve their problem. Out of 6 main buildings of water-line system, only one is operating in Kheta, that’s why the water supply is not enough for all the districts. According to service center manager, Butkhuz Khorava, these districts need to make an agreement. The water barrier should be replaced with the bolt that will regulate the graphic of water provision.
