270 Families in Gonio Are Deprived of Their Land

November 24, 2010
The Kelvachauri Property Right Recognition Commission has begun to  confiscate  land ownership certifications issued in 2007-2008. By now 270 property certifications have been abolished. The property owners received information from the newspaper Adjara November 12 edition. The newspaper published the names of those 270 people, the legality of whose certifications will be discussed soon by the commission.

According to the residents, the reason for the land confiscation in the surroundings of Gonio castle was due to the selling of lands to  foreign businessmen and the construction of a new highway.

“Why did they give us ownership if we did not deserve it? When the President and Varshalomidze gave us certifications in the ceremonial meeting, did  they not know that it was illegal?! Now some investor got interested and the state is thinking about gaining profit. Nobody is worried about us,” – state the residents.

The residents gathered in front of the Adjara Government House with the request of halting the land confiscation. They were met with the Head of Kelvachauri Sakrebulo Malkhaz Partenadze and the Governor Teimuraz Dumbadze.

Malkhaz Partenadze states that the reason behind renewing the process of studying the certifications was the address of the Georgian National Agency of Cultural Heritage Protection. According to Partenadze, the property certifications were issued mistakenly and Levan Varshalomidze did not have information on the significance of the territory.

It has been 20 years that the Gonio population has been  working on the land issued by the President’s decree.
