Russia Placed Additional Military Techniques in the Occupied Regions In Reply to Saakashvili’s Initiative

December 8, 2010
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Georgia reported that Russia placed additional military techniques in the occupied territories of Georgia.

The Foreign Ministry of Georgia stressed out that the military systems “Smerch” are on the list of those weapons which were restricted by the pact of the European Armed Forces.

“Placement of the Smerch type systems in the occupied territories of Georgia once more demonstrates that Russia created conditions to illegally increase its military forces in the area of the EAF pact,” statement of the Foreign Ministry.

The Foreign Ministry thinks that the placement of the Smerch systems in Tskhinvali region is continuation of the aggressive policy against Georgia which threatens the peace and the stability not only in the Caucasus but in the entire Black Sea Region.

“Rapid militarization of Abkhazia and Tskhinvali region demonstrates that dismissal of the OSCE and UN observers from the occupied regions of Georgia aimed to avoid the international monitoring and control in the area,” the statement of the Ministry.

According to the statement, completely ungrounded and slander accusations of the officials of the Russian government, as if some threats of terrorist acts are coming from Georgia, should be discussed in this context as well. The officials of the ministry of foreign affairs think that on the background of similar statements and rapid militarization of the occupied territories, the threat coming from Russia is increasing noticeably.

“Russia replies to the peaceful initiative of the president of Georgia and declaration on non-use of the weapon with similar asymmetric activities though the initiative was largely supported by the international community,” stated the officials of the foreign ministry.

The Foreign Ministry of Georgia calls upon the international community and international organizations to evaluate the aggressive policy and provocative actions of Russia and increase its effort to compel Russia to execute its international obligations, among them the agreement on cease-fire signed on August 12, 2008 and start prompt and complete de-occupation of the Georgian territory.

On December 3, according to the official website of the Defense Ministry of Georgia, additional armed forces were introduced into Tskhinvali region – the so-called fourth military base of the Russian Federation and they were supplied with the new armament and military techniques. In parallel to it, based on the information of the armed forces of the South Federal Oblast, division of the reactive system Smerch was placed near Tskhinvali. It is noteworthy that the artillery system covers the distance of 70 - 90 kilometers.
