The Human Rights Center Monitors Court Hearing on Journalist’s Case

December 8, 2010
The Human Rights Center will monitor the court hearing of the Journalist Ilia Martkoplishvili’s case. The judge at the Dedoplistskaro district court Shorena Kavelashvili will discuss the case.

Reportedly, member of the Dedoplistskaro municipal board, the chairman of the commission for agricultural issues, environment and property management Gela Tetrauli sued the journalist for the disrespect and degrading; he requested 3 000 GEL for the reimbursement of the moral damage.

Gela Tetrauli said the journalist had blamed him in the misappropriation of the budget funds several times without any grounds.

The journalist Ilia Martkloplishvili does not agree with the accusation and states that the requirements of the public official are groundless.

“There is law in Georgia about freedom of expression which is so liberal that the public officials have meager chances to win the trial against journalists. Moreover, the suitor is entitled to provide the evidence and not the defense side. However, it does not allow a journalist to spread incorrect information about a public servant. But, when the public officials claim that systematic criticism from journalists hinder their activities, they are not right, because the law entitles the public servant to endure the criticism. The Human Rights Center intends to monitor the court hearing of the case,” said the coordinator of the Kakheti office of the Human Rights Center Gela Mtivlishvili.
