December 21, 2010

Georgia holds 103rd place in the world according to the Democracy Index, according to the analytical research company The Economist Intelligence Unit of the British magazine Economist.

Georgia fell in the sector of “hybrid regimes” after Uganda, Mozambique, Cambodia, Kenya and Bhutan. The democracy index of Georgia was determined to be 5,5 according to the index of election process, pluralism, government functioning, political involvement, political culture and civil liberties.

Russia and Armenia fell in the same category, Russia on the 107th place, Armenia – 109th. Norway, Iceland, Denmark, Sweden and New Zealand formed the top five countries of Democracy Index.

The Deputy Speaker of Parliament Mikheil Machavariani, representative of parliamentary majority while evaluating Georgia’s 103rd place explains that there is a lot more to do in the country.

As Mikheil Machavariani stated to the journalists, government knows that there is still a lot to do in the country and that is why the works have been started to enhance the media transparency. Mikheil Machavariani also paid attention to improvement of election environment and noted that there is a political agreement on completely new, improved election code and not on certain amendments.

According to Machavariani, the public was surprised by this rating as journalists got used to hearing Georgia’s leading position in numerous ratings. Machavariani assures that in the nearest period Georgia will advance in this rating as well.
