Saakashvili, Nazarbaev and Chaves Congratulated Lukashenko with the Victory in the Elections

December 21, 2010

Georgian colleague Mikheil Saakashvili also congratulated Aleksandre Lukashenko with the victory in the presidential elections of Belorussia. The statement on the official website of the Belorussian president reported.

According to the statement, the president of Kazakhstan Nursultan Nazarbaev and president of Venezuela Ugo Chaves also congratulated him with the victory in the elections besides Saakashvili.

The official website of the Belorussian president reports that Russian president Dimitry Medvedev made positive comments about the elections in Belorussia and added that Belorussia will always remain one of the close partners of Russia; as for elections, it is their internal affair.

The administration of the Georgian president abstained from the evaluation of the presidential elections in Belorussia. Spokesperson of the president Manana Manjgaladze said that evaluation will be made after the election results are published.

Chairman of the security and defense committee of the parliament of Georgia Givi Targamadze observed the elections in Minsk. Member of the Georgian delegation in Minsk Giorgi Akhvlediani from the Christian-Democrat Movement confirmed the information in his interview with the Interpresnews.

“Givi Targamadze is also here; Georgian delegation in Minsk is quite large and it was staffed by the members of both parliamentary majority and minority,” said Akhvlediani.

Givi Targamadze was refused to get observer’s status during the Belorussian presidential elections in 2006. Then, 6-member delegation of the Georgian parliament traveled to Minsk to observe the elections. However, MPs Givi Targamadze and Giga Bokeria were not in the delegation.

Givi Targamadze clarified that Georgian delegation was refused by the Belorussian government to observe the presidential elections on March 19.

“It started on January 20 when the chairperson of the Central Election Commission of Belorussia stated that they had invited delegations from the CIS countries except Georgia. Apparently, Belarusian government is afraid of Georgian delegation. I think, their fear is well-grounded and we will not stop our assistance to Belarusian population regardless our participation in the elections or not,” said Givi Targamadze.

Besides that, Givi Targamadze became a target of another scandal. The anchor of the TV-program of the Russian TV-Company “1st Channel” “Odnako” Mikheil Leontiev showed conversation of two persons. One of them was Givi Targamadze according to the anchor. Targamadze was complaining about Milinkevich “who dispersed protest rallies in Minsk which started after the presidential elections of March.” According to the recording, Targamadze threatened Milinkevich with death.

Givi Targamadze said the accusation was “ridiculous”.
