Georgian civil society representatives express concern on the human rights violations committed in Belarus.
On December 19th of 2010 thousands of citizens gathered in Belarus, Minsk at the October Square for expressing their opinion on Presidential Elections. Later they moved to the Independence Square. According to Amnesty International:
“At approximately 10pm a small group of young men standing by the doors to the parliament building armed with batons, their faces covered with scarves started to call on the demonstrators to storm the building. They broke down the doors and broke windows after which riot police sought to disperse the entire demonstration.
Eye witnesses stated that opposition leaders called on the demonstrators to remain peaceful. They also reported that the police beat demonstrators and journalists with batons.”
The demonstration was forcefully dispersed. Approximately two hundred demonstrators were beaten. Hundreds of them were detained and imposed the administrative responsibility. Their cases have been discussed according to the violation of right to fair trial.
Several Presidential candidates and the members of their headquarters were detained. The criminal case has been filed against them. The lawyers were not admitted to several detainees.
The health state of two detained Presidential candidates Vladimir Neklaev and Andrey Sanikov is alarming.
According to Amnesty International, Mr. Sanikov is observed to have a leg broken and the skull damaged.
We, the representatives of Georgian civil society call on the Belarus government:
- to investigate the supposed disproportionate use of force by police;
- ensure that no one is detained by violating the law;
- ensure that the legal assistance is available for the detainees;
- ensure the detainees’ right to fair trial
- Respect the right to physical integrity of the detainees
- investigate the cases of health damage of Mr. Sanikov and Neklaev
We are calling on Georgian government to condemn the human rights violations in Belarus.
We are calling on Georgian civil society to actively follow the subsequent development of events in Belarus.
