Sozar Subari Calls on International Organizations to Respond to the Crackdown of Veterans’ Action

January 13, 2011
Chair of Georgian Party Sozar Subai sent a special appeal to the international organizations and diplomatic corps accredited in Georgia and calls upon them to respond to the dispersal of veteran’s action.

The text of the appeal was introduced by him to media in the office of their party. Subari underscored that the veterans’ rally was organized in accordance to Georgian Law on Assembly and Manifestation, and people who physically insulted and detained the demonstrators were dressed in civil clothes that made it impossible to identify them.

The appeal states the judge passed judgment based on the testimonies of the police officers and refused to be introduced to the video footage, showing that the detainees did not commit anything illegal; furthermore, the demonstrators were verbally and physically abused.

‘President of Georgia Mikheil Saakashvili speaks much about freedom, democracy and modernization during his speeches on international arenas and in his interviews with foreign newspapers. He is often called a reformer leader who tries to turn the backward country into a European progressive state. But, I think, European orientation shall be first of all expressed in his relation with Georgian citizens, in the respect of the Rule of law, human rights and basic freedom, as well as in the respect of personal dignity,’ Sozar Subari said.

He added that incidents when police officers abuse their power occur more frequently. Subari said the reaction of the international community is one of the effective tool (if not only one) to influence the activities of the Georgian government.

“It can be proved by the fact that after U.S. Ambassador John Bass unilaterally condemned the crackdown of veterans, Georgian MIA released a special statement about dismissal of a police officer who abused his powers,” Sozar Subari’s special appeal reads.
