The Raid on IDPs Continues!

According to the latest information, the IDPs detained during eviction from Bagebi dorm were transferred to Tbilisi City Court. There are four women among the detainees: Julieta Tsindeliani, Irina Pirtskhelani, Nazi Ioseliani and Bela Khergiani. Along with the IDPs the police detained one of the organizers of the IDP protest rallies – Manuchar Sigua the head of the Civil Movement of IDPs and a representative of Free Georgia Gia Kruashvili.

Nino Ramishvili, lawyer of Gia Kruashvili could not manage to enter the court. The proceeding had already started when she came. According to her she was late as tried to ascertain where the detainees were taken.

According to the disseminated information, the IDPs tried to enter the territory of dorm where their relatives were evicted from. Police did not let them see and help their relatives. The conflict evoked due to this reason.

The eviction of IDPs from the dorm and former building of customs started today at 7 am. According to the Ministry of IDPs from the Occupied Territories, Accommodation and Refugees, the IDPs have been living illegally in these buildings and that is why they have been evicted. The Ministry states that nobody will stay without home and the evicted IDPs will be given alternative residence places in the regions of Georgia under private property.

The majority of IDPs refuse to move to regions. They have been living in Tbilisi for years now. Most of them live and study in the capital.

Police did not let anyone enter the dorm territory but the IDPs living there. While the police and IDPs’ relatives were disputing about ten people were detained.

During several hours it was impossible to ascertain the fate of detainees. They were not allowed to contact their friends and lawyers. “We visited every police department of Vake-Saburtalo region and tried to ascertain where the detainees were taken,” – stated Dimitri Omanadze the deputy chair of Civil Movement of IDPs with Human Rights Center.

As the representative of political movement Free Georgia Lasha Chkhartishvili stated to us, he received information from one of the detainees that they were in the police department situated at Gagarini square. Human Rights Center representative personally visited this department where they stated that the detainees had not been there and they should look for them in the main police agency.

It should be noted that according to Interpressnews information disseminated on January 17th the head of Civil Movement of IDPs Manuchar Sigua and his assistant Dimistri Omanidze blame government in the intimidation.

According to Dimitri Omanadze, on January 16th, police visited his home without any grounds: “They stated to my parents that I should stop the protest rallies and protecting IDP rights. Police also visited the family of the head of the movement Manuchar Sigua. They are trying to pressure and intimidate us in this way.”
