Crocodile Tears

January 26, 2011
President Mikheil Saakashvili reacted upon the IDP eviction process for the first time and stated that the state cannot be of full value until one person remains an IDP.

Saakashvili gave explanations on the current situation of IDPs in the live TV phone-in The President Answers the People’s Questions.

President states, that he is very angry and unhappy; every day he wakes up with the feeling of desperation and feels kicked out of home.

“My home is Abkhazia, my land - Tkhinvali and upper valleys which are occupied today; I can identify myself to the group of IDPs the most. When the camera caught me crying once or twice, it was not artificial. I really have cried a lot on this issue and have stayed sleepless many nights,” – states Saakashvili.

According to President’s statement, he will say one more time “next year in Sokhumi” and nobody should go after this statement. He will repeat this until all the IDPs go back home. “This is our promised land and this pain will never be assuaged or forgotten,” – he added.

According to Saakashvili’s statement, saying that the IDP problem will be solved by accommodating them in state or private institutions, is wrong and people should not deceive themselves.

According to President, the IDP settlements are being built in the places where there is high employment. He named Poti, Tskhaltubo, Batumi and a zone between Anaklia and Poti to be such places. Saakashvili also noted that part of the IDPs already received compensation. The houses were built for part of them in a fast speed and the residence places were legalized for 10 thousand people, according to President’s statement.
