Long-Term Date with Prisoner will Cost 60 GEL

February 3, 2011
Three star type hotels have been arranged for the accommodation of prisoners and their families for long-term dates. The Minister of Legal Assistance and Corrections Khatuna Kalmakhelidze stated the following on February 3rd at the joint meeting of Human Rights and Legal Issues Parliamentary Committees while presenting the Draft Law on Long Term Dates. She also talked about the infrastructure of these buildings.

According to Kalmakhelidze, she had the chance to get acquainted with similar departments of European states and thinks that the infrastructure arranged in Georgia is a lot better.

According to Kalmakhelidze’s explanation, the prisoners and their guests will feel maximally comfortable in the three star type hotel rooms. They will be provided with a meal three times a day. There will be a store, yard and a separate bed for children and other entertainments.

According to the Minister, she feels very nervous since it is a serious and very significant project. She asks the public to “forgive her” if there are any flaws at the beginning of the project.

“I am nervous since it is a new project and I want it to pass without flaws,” – stated Khatuna Kalmakhelidze.

According to her, the long-term dates will cost 60 GEL and it is the lowest price that could have been established: “If the long-term dates were free-of-charge it would have been impossible to activate this program so fast.”

According to Kalmakhelidze’s evaluation, free long-term dates could have been planted in Georgian reality in 10 years. She does not exclude that the long-term dates may become free in the future.
