Former Judge Avtandil Chachua Found Dead

February 9, 2011

Former judge Avtandil Chachua was found dead in his house in Bolkvadze Street in Tbilisi.

The correspondents of the Interpresnews reported from the scene of incident that criminalists finished their work on the 7th floor of Bolkvadze Street # 3 and left area without making any comments. The body was taken for expertise; he has one bullet lodge.

60-year-old Avtandil Chachua ran a law office recently. The lawyer Gela Nikolaishvili told the Interpresnews that Chachua was attorney of Igor Giorgadze’s supporters together with him.

In 1990s Chachua was judge. During Shevardnadze’s government, he, together with other judges, was dismissed from the court.

The former chairperson of the Supreme Court of Georgia Mindia Ugrekhelidze said Chachua was the only judge who brought suit against the parliament at the Constitutional Court regarding the dismissal of judges and won the trial.

Mindia Ugrekhelidze said the judges were dismissed because the government planned to employ new people in the courts. The Constitutional Court evaluated the process as unfair and called it political act. Despite that, the government made the political decision and did not re-employ old judges.

The investigation works on the version of suicide of the former judge. The Ministry of Internal Affairs reported about it.

The neighbors positively described Avtandil Chachua. Leri Gotsadze told the Interpersnews that he had met and talked with Chachua several days before.

The neighbors also share the assumption about suicide. However, they do not know the reason for similar decision. The family members avoid contact with journalists.
