Republican Party Requests Human Rights Defenders to Protect Employees of Tbilisi City Cleaning Service Department

February 21, 2011

The Republican Party asks human rights defenders to protect the rights of the employees of the Tbilisi City Cleaning Service Department.

Tina Khidasheli, a member of the Tbilisi City Council from the Republican Party said at the briefing on February 21 that the employees of the Cleaning Service Department have been filing complaints about the disorder, discrimination and violation of labor rights to the City Council for the last several months.

Three employees of the Cleaning Service Department – Lali Mamoeva, Zara Musaeva and Dali Khvadagiani also attended the press-conference.

“The Republican Party calls upon the Human Rights Commission of the City Council, the Public Defender of Georgia and the Human Rights Committee of the Parliament of Georgia to pay particular attention to the problems of these people and to protect their rights.

“The fate of those three employees- or anyone who actively criticizes the policy of their work- is under particular threat. In the past, all similar “rebels” were fired from work. We do not want these people to be persecuted by their administration only because they attend this press-conference,” said Khidasheli.

Khidasheli added that since 2007 the cleaning service department has encountered many problems. “More precisely, the employees are fired without any explanations and legal basis; medical insurance was granted to them only once for several months before elections. Since December 1, 2010 the administration added [work-related] responsibilities to the cleaners but reduced their salaries. They are not provided a concrete working schedule and they work 8 hours per day without days-off. Although the service department for planting greens and shrubbery is a completely different institution, the cleaners implement their functions too. They do not belong to a trade union and cleaners are mistreated on ethnic grounds.”
