Official of the IDP Government of Abkhazia on Hunger Strike in His Own Office

February 28, 2011
Head of the Public and Media Relation Department of the Supreme Council of Autonomous Republic of Abkhazia Sergi Sajaia started a hunger strike in his own office today. Sajaia personally informed the “Interpresnews” about it.

According to his clarification, he requests resignation of the chairman of the Supreme Council of Autonomous Republic of Abkhazia Gia Gvazava and is not going to stop hunger strike until the society pays attention to his requests.

Sajaia blames Gvazava in corruption. He said the car which Gvazava purchased for the office was his own car. “This car was out-of-order. However, he paid 32 000 USD for the car due to his own interest. He seriously damages state budget. I cannot accept his political incompetence either. He is inadequate attitude to the problems of IDPs,” Sajaia said.

The chairman of the Supreme Council of Abkhazia Gia Gvazava told “Interpresnews” that he is going to take measures against his colleague Sergi Sajaia in accordance to the law. He said he plans to meet Sergi Sajaia to hear his complaints; afterwards he will meet lawyers and take measures in accordance to the law.

“I do not think a person has right to be on a hunger strike in the office of the governmental institution,” Gvazava added.

Gia Gvazava connected Sajaia’s decision with the conclusion of the Chamber of Control, which found shortcomings in the activities of technical department and dismissed one employee. He added that according to the same conclusion, some violations were found in the activities of other employees too and he is going to take corresponding measures against them.

“I petitioned to the Chamber of Control, because I doubted there were some problems in the Supreme Council. I received the conclusion on February 25. There were problems in technical department. I did not plan to fire Sajaia. He supports those people whom I have already dismissed or now am going to dismiss. This group does not like our policy and they are trying to attract attention by similar activities,” Gia Ggvazava denied Sajaia’s accusations.
