Mikheil Saakashvili – We Need Opposition Whose Governance Will Not Cause Tragic Disaster for the Country

March 1, 2011
“Georgian opposition is not as strong as I wish them to be,” said President of Georgia Mikheil Saakashvili in his interview with the Lithuanian Magazine Valstybė.

Lithuanian journalist asked if there is any opposition party in Georgia whom Mikheil Saakashvili would calmly assign governance after their victory in the elections.

The president replied that Georgia needs the opposition who will not cause tragic disaster for the country when they come into power.

“However, our current opposition is much better than we had several years ago when most part of them tend to sell Georgia to Russia. They allege that I do not allow the opposition to express their opinion by media sources but several researches showed that Georgian opposition can express their opinions on every national channel,” said the president.

He added that the real problem about Georgian opposition is their slogans which Georgian citizens do not like.

“The louder they shout, the worse they look. I partly agree with the recommendations of the West – we have problems because we have not achieved the necessary level of development yet. On the other hand, evaluating the Georgian opposition parties experts cannot understand the survivals of the old soviet policy– they try to tell as much lie as possible. Finally, the West does not wish to assist us when they hear their accusations,” said the President.

Mikheil Saakashvili said in his interview with the Lithuanian Magazine that according to the results of the recent studies the popularity and power of the opposition is increasing.

“Although Georgia cannot boast with the strong opposition, I hope for better future. I think, they will become strong enough to win the elections and adequately govern the country,” said the president of Georgia.
