USA, EU Concerned about Labor Market in Georgia

March 2, 2011

USA and EU are concerned about labor market situation in Georgia. Jack Vogt, a lawyer from the US Trade Union stated the following at the press conference held at the Central Office of Trade Unions in Tbilisi.

According to him, the labor market situation in Georgia raises concern.

As Vogt States, Georgian Labor Code has been strictly criticized by the international organizations thus the US Trade Union has addressed the US government to suspend Export Promotion Program with Georgia.

According to Jack Vogt, EU is concerned with what is going on in Georgia and finds questionable whether Georgian should have right to apply Export Promotion Program. He came to study the situation and investigate all cases mentioned in the complaint, according to him.

As Jack Vogt states, the aim of the complaint is to start dialogue with the Georgian government so it takes concrete steps to fix the situation. He states, that if Georgian government does not take measures for fixing the situation, they will address the US government to withdraw privileges of Georgia.

According to him, the Labor Code adopted as a result of the reforms does not meet the standards and should be changed. Labor Code does not ensure that the employee is not fired unduly and it violates the fundamental right of strike, according to him.
